CLINICAL EXPERIENCE
Curriculum:
The curriculum is intended to build upon basic experiences with increasing challenges as training proceeds. Specialty rotations and electives have been built into the curriculum to promote self-assessment of knowledge and PG selection of rotations in areas needing to be strengthened.
Year One:
  • 2 months Inpatient Ward
  • 5 months NICU
  • 2 months Ambulatory
  • 1 month Behavior/Development
  • 1 month Newborn Nursery
  • 1 month Neonatology
(One call free month; call during wards every 4-5, call during NICU every 3-4, no overnight call in newborn nursery, call during other rotations consists of ER shifts from 5-11p 1-2 per week)
Year Two:
  • 2 months PICU
  • 2 months Emergency Medicine
  • 3 month NICU
  • 1 month Private Practice
  • 1 month Renal
  • 1 month Infectious Diseases
  • 1 month Ambulatory - Surgical Subspecialties/Anesthesia
  • 1 month Elective
(Two call free months; call in PICU every 3, call in NICU every 3-4; in ER 12 hour shifts, during other rotations Night Float 4-6 times per month)
In addition to the above designated rotations, PG spend one half day in their own continuity practice. PG are assigned to a small practice located in the outpatient center with 2-3 other residents of varying levels of training and a general pediatrics faculty member. The practices, for the most part, remain intact for the two years of training, allowing PG's to build a practice and follow children longitudinally over a two -year period of time.

Conferences:
To complement the teaching in the scheduled rotations, a core curriculum has been developed in the form of noon conferences. These conferences occur daily and are given primarily by the fulltime faculty. Windsor offers a "crash course", mainly targeted to review many pediatric emergencies which they may potentially face during the course of their DM program.
Each morning begins with a conference. Four days a week we have morning report and once a week we offer grand rounds. Morning report is a dynamic, case-based, teaching conference organized by senior PG. Cases are presented, in an interactive manner, followed by generation of problem lists and differential diagnoses. The presenting PG ends the conference with a mini-didactic session on the patient's diagnosed problem. Finally, several Fridays per month, the NICU team presents an interesting case for discussion and teaching.
Grand rounds occur on Tuesday mornings. In addition to Windsor faculty many guest faculty also give grand rounds, several as named visiting professors. When we have guest faculty and visiting professors, they are involved in making inpatient rounds and providing additional teaching for the PG's and students.
